How To's: Using Paint-A-Pot™ Stencils

Supplies

  • Paint-A-Pot™ stencil
  • Spray Adhesive and/or painters masking tape
  • Sea Sponges* one per color is easiest
  • Stencil brushes one per color (for small designs and accents)
  • Paint in desired colors
  • Paint tray, plastic plate or bowl for use as a palette
  • Clear acrylic sealer if you intend to use pots for plants and are not using a self- sealing paint (such as DecoArt Patio Paint)

*Not all sea sponges are alike, look for one with a lot of little "fingers". It is more economical to buy one large sponge and when dry and hard, cut it into smaller pieces, keeping "fingers" on each piece.

Surface: Paint-A-Pot™ stencils were designed specifically for use on terra cotta pots, but can be used on any paintable surface such as floorcloths, placemats, etc.

Preparation: Be sure your pot is clean and thoroughly dry. Clip stencil pieces out of the background plastic.

Sealing the Pot: To use the pot with a live plant after painting, the inside of the pot must be sealed with a clear acrylic sealer to prevent paint on the outside of the pot from peeling.

Stenciling Tips

Spray stencil adhesive Adhesive: Spray stencil adhesive and/or painters masking tape will hold the stencils in place while you paint.

Preparation: Base coat the inside and outside of your pot first. Allow to dry completely. Seal inside of pot (if desired) with clear acrylic sealer or use a self sealing paint.

Painting: Attach the side stencil to one side of the pot, paint using sea sponge or brush. (Note: use very little paint or it will Use very little paint when stenciling! run under the stencil). When pot has dried thoroughly, attach the side (or bonus) stencil to the opposite side of the pot and paint. Use this technique for the rim of the pot as well.

Depending on the brand and exact size of the pot used, you may need to adjust the design where it comes together on the sides. For best results, plan your layout before you begin painting.

Bonus Designs: These are for the back of a pot if you don't wish the same design on both sides OR on odd sized pots OR on an accessory that you want to have a coordinating design.
