Basic Instructions:

1.Wash, dry and iron the muslin fabric. Cut into two equal pieces (about 30 x 38" each) for the front and back of your quilt. You will stencil only one piece.

2. Find the center of your canvas or quilt top fabric and mark with a light pencil dot. (Hint: you may find it easier to tape your fabric down to a larger surface such as a table, when you are measuring and painting, so the fabric doesn’t move.)

3. Position the stencil so that the center dot of the middle quilting design is over the center dot you just made. Measure to be sure the stencil is straight to the sides of the canvas or fabric. Secure in place with masking tape.

4. Stencil design as per picture using one brush per color. For the "quilting" lightly stencil using BOTH red and green in the lines. It will give a grayish tone as the colors mix. Since this is designed to mimic applique, it is not shaded like wall stenciling.

5. Remove tape and turn stencil around 180 degrees*. Note the middle line of designs will overlap. DO NOT PAINT THIS PART AGAIN. Line up the center dot with the stencil as you did before. Tape stencil down and finish painting. Allow to thoroughly dry. Heat set by placing painted side up on an ironing board. Place paper towels over painted surface and iron. Repeat with clean towel until no color is removed on towel. Be sure to iron all painted areas.

6.Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Baste. Machine quilt around each of the painted motifs and along the quilting lines. Trim and bind edges.

*Basket motifs in corners may be individually rotated and painted to all face the same direction, if you wish.
