How To's: Stenciling Tips and Techniques

"Problem-Free" Tips

  • Stick masking tape onto your apron before using it on your stencil. This will remove some of the adhesive so that you don't damage your painted surface when you lift the tape.

  • A good quality soft stencil brush will give the best results.

  • Flax latex paint on walls or Americana acrylics on hard surfaces are the easiest to stencil on.

  • Stencil a "practice" print on paper to test colors. Use this print to plan spacing on your wall.

  • Repair stencils by placing transparent tape on both sides of torn areas. Then trim tape with a utility knife.

  • Clean Brushes after use with Brush & Stencil Cleaner. Rinse with water. Reshape by placing a rubber band around the bristles while they dry. Let dry completely before using again.

  • Brush & Stencil Cleaner is ideal to clean stencils while they are lying flat to prevent damage. Clean both sides to prevent smudges on the working surface.
